Hi,

Is the following sentence correct?

Ich vermute, dass mehr Frauen als früher arbeiten.

Or should it be?

Ich vermute, dass mehr Frauen arbeiten als früher.

Thanks in advance.

Hey adman,

I'm not a native speaker of German, so I'm not your best bet here, but as far as I know, the verb in that sentence (arbeiten) has to go at the very end of the sentence (according to the grammar rules).

I suppose the latter example is acceptable, too, however, for informal German. :)

Cheers,

Hi

Thanks for the replies to my (not very well put) question.

I think that comparative expressions (using wie or als) CAN go after the verb (as an exception to the general rule which says verb last), but what I was trying to ask was, in general, MUST they?

i.e. would “Ich vermute, dass heutzutage mehr Frauen als früher arbeiten” be wrong, or just not as elegant?

Thanks again (in advance).

Hey adman,

Hopefully, some native speakers of German will chime in here quickly to help you out. In the meantime, I will do my best to assist.

I'm sticking with my position that, strictly speaking, after "dass," verbs have to come last.

In other words, I believe you should say

“Ich vermute, dass heutzutage mehr Frauen als früher arbeiten."

but you can also say, informally,

“Ich vermute, dass heutzutage mehr Frauen arbeiten als früher.”

That's just one non-native speaker's opinion... :) What do the natives say? I'm certainly curious to find out!

Cheers,
Yama

well, i'd assist but as yaku seems to know it best(as a nonnative) and delete my correct answers - go ahead.

Hi adman,

I think both versions are “correct”. But, as you suspected, putting the ‘als’ part after the verb is a little better and probably more usual..

fredbär

Hey all,

Just to keep the "debate" going... Here are two examples of "als früher" from the same source (website) used differently.

In the first example, you have "als früher" followed by the verb:

https://infocus.credit-suisse.com/app/a ... 18&lang=DE

In the second example, you have "als früher" after the verb:

https://infocus.credit-suisse.com/app/a ... 20&lang=DE

(You have to search for "als früher" in both articles.)

Please note that both articles are pretty old (from 2007 and 2004, respectively), so maybe usage has changed over the years. I'd also like to point out that these are just two examples of "als früher" being used and the authors of the articles are not necessarily grammar experts.

Anyway, thanks to adman for piquing my curiosity on this grammar point.

Cheers,
Yama

As a native speaker I'd agree to fredbär and spontaneously I'd say "Ich vermute, dass heutzutage mehr Frauen arbeiten als früher." The other version is not wrong, but in my opinion this one is more frequently used.
But always remember: the word order in German is not very strict, so keep cool!

Hey myna,

I think you make some good points.

Thanks for your quite useful advice.
