Hi everyone,

Is there a general way of describing how the prefix “er-” changes the meaning of a verb?

e.g kaufen and erkaufen?

Thanks in advance,

adman

Hi adman,

unfortunately there is not. Many verbs change completely their meaning,

e.g. zählen and erzählen
kennen and erkennen.

I'm sorry that German is that difficult

hi myna,

thanks for the reply - even if it is bad news ;)

I was just hoping to cut down on the amount of vocabulary I have to learn :(

What a useless reply. Why would you offer it? That's like saying "re-" has no meaning in English.

zählen-count
erzählen-recount (meaning "tell")
kennen-know
erkennen-"re-know" (recognize).

I think what Captchad says is true, er- often means (something like) re- in English, but, I think it can also change the meaning of a verb to something like ‘to xxx to death’, or ‘fatally’.

e.g. trinken – to drink, ertrinken – to drown (drink to death!).

And aren't there also cases where it means something like to enact, or put into practice (like finden/erfinden, kaufen/erkaufen)?
