Last night arte showed an old German film called “Mutter Krausen’s fahrt ins Glück” and I wondered if anyone could explain the use of the apostrophe in the Genetiv “Krausen’s”? I would have expected simply "Krausens". Has the rule changed since 1929? Or is there another explanation?

Thanks in advance,

Hi DrDrDrMr,

actually it should be : "Mutter Krausens fahrt ins Glück"

When reading the text there is mentioned:
MUTTER KRAUSENS FAHRT INS GLÜCK erzählt die Geschichte von Mutter Krause. Sie lebt mit ihren erwachsenen Kindern Erna und dem arbeitslosen Paul im Wedding und verdient ihr Geld als Zeitungsausträgerin.

Please also have a look at:
https://www.google.de/webhp?hl=de#hl=de ... 52&bih=596

I think it is just a typo.

Thanks folletto,

I must admit I thought it was a typo too, but arte have the apostrophe more than once (the link is even “mutter-krausen-s-fahrt-ins-glueck”). But, what convinced me that it’s deliberate was that within the film itself the title has the apostrophe too - right at the beginning (at 00:00 and then again after 45 seconds) . :?:

Hey all,

Shouldn't the word fahrt actually be capitalized? That should be Fahrt, right?

Hi,

Looks as though you might be on to something DrDrDrMr; browsing in an old grammar book from 1922 (as one does ;)) I came across this paragraph in the section on the use of the apostrophe ;

“2. It is now not usual to place an apostrophe before s in the gen.: Schillers, Goethes, &c. Older usage: Schiller’s, &c”

So, using an apostrophe seems to have been ‘usual’ at some point; I don’t know if anyone knows more about this?

(I think it should be ‘Fahrt’ too.)

P

ps the book is A Grammar of the German Language by Curme (2nd Edition).

Der Originaltitel lautet zeichengetreu: "Mutter Krausens Fahrt ins Glück”.
http://www.filmposter-archiv.de/filmplakat.php?id=1486

In der deutschen Sprache gibt es keinen Genitivapostroph. Es trifft jedoch zu, dass ein solcher Apostroph vor der Entstehung des 'Dudens' manchmal eingefügt wurde.

Thanks everyone, really appreciate your efforts. :)

Really interesting - maybe use of the ‘possessive apostrophe’ was as confusing and prone to error as it (still) is in English :)

Grammatikus, pre-Duden usage certainly seems to have been inconsistent, e.g.this poster seems to have the apostrophe http://www.cinegraph.de/filmmat/fm5/mutterkrause.gif

And yes, yakyuyama, it should be Fahrt (the fahrt was my typo) .

Hi @ all,

this kind of apostrophe is called

'Deppenapostroph' :-)

Irgendein Dödel hat irgendwann einmal angefangen, den sächsischen Genitiv auf die deutsche Grammatik zu übertragen. - Und alle anderen haben abgekupfert.

Hier gibt es eine schöne Zusammenfassung:
http://www.spiegel.de/kultur/zwiebelfisch/zwiebelfisch-abc-der-gebrauch-des-apostrophs-im-ueberblick-a-283781.html

Wo ein Apostroph nicht gesetzt werden darf:
Bei Eigennamen im Genitiv steht in der Regel niemals ein Apostroph

Hey all,

Those are some really cool movie posters, both with (?) and without the apostrophe.

Thanks to everyone, too, for all of the interesting information posted throughout the thread.

Cheers,

I think the English equivalent is referred to as the “greengrocers’ apostrophe”

There’s also an interesting article on German (mis)use here; http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apostrophitis
