wrong form?

di Kevin
A friend wrote this sentence: Ich sagte ihm er werde das bereuen.
Shouldn't it be wird? I thought werde is first person?

Hi Kevin,

"werde" is reported speech in past tense, consequently absolutely correct. :D

Objection, your honour: not past but future tense. I'm sorry!

The second part of the sentence ‘er werde das bereuen.’ is reported speech and so, rather than use the Indicative mood (er wird) you have to switch to the Subjunctive (‘Konjunctiv ‘in German) mood (er werde).

If you look in your grammar book under Reported Speech (Indirekte Rede) or Subjunctive 1 (Konjunktiv 1) - it should explain it properly.
