William Higinbotham, der damalige Leiter der Abteilung Instrumentation Division am Brookhaven National Laboratory der amerikanischen Regierung, entwickelte das Spiel für Besucher des Laboratoriums, als er feststellte, dass sich diese bei der Besichtigung der meist statischen Displays langweilten.
Das damals aus einem Analogcomputer und einem Oszillografen bestehende Spiel steht am Anfang einer Entwicklung, die stark vom Fortschritt der Computertechnologie gekennzeichnet ist und die das ZKM dokumentarisch belegen wird.
Die grafisch noch ebenso einfachen Spiele der folgenden Jahre entstanden in erster Linie auf Großrechnern amerikanischer Universitäten und Institutionen, wie beispielsweise das Spiel Spacewar aus dem Jahre 1962, das das Massachusetts Institute of Technology ( MIT ) entwickelte.
