www.khk.ceres.rub.deDer Katechismus der Katholischen Kirche betont die Tatsache, dass diese Kirchen ( als Gebäude ) „ nicht einfach Versammlungsorte [ sind ], sondern die Kirche bezeichnen und bezeugen, die an diesem Ort lebt, die Wohnung Gottes unter den in Christus versöhnten und geeinten Menschen. ” ( vgl. KKK 1180 ).
Im Frühchristentum wurde dann die Basilika mit großem rechteckigem Mittelschiff, das in eine halbkreisförmige Apsis mündete, zur typischen Form eines Kirchengebäudes.
Diese Gebäudeart entsprach den Anforderungen der christlichen Liturgie und ließ den Erbauern zugleich eine große Freiheit hinsichtlich der Wahl der einzelnen architektonischen und künstlerischen Elemente.

In the early Christian period, the typical form of the church building became the basilica with large rectangular central naves, which end in a semi-circular apse.
This type of building corresponded to the needs of the Christian liturgy and, at the same time, gave the builders great liberty for the choice of individual architectural and artistic elements.
