Jährlich werden vom Bundesamt für Wald, das im Institut für Waldschutz des Bundesforschungs- und Ausbildungszentrum für Wald, Naturgefahren und Landschaft angesiedelt ist, ca. 1000 Kontrollen von Holzverpackungsmaterial durchgeführt.
Der forstliche Pflanzenschutz hat in Österreich eine langjährige Tradition.
Abgesehen von den strengen Bestimmungen nach dem Forstgesetz, wurde im Jahr 1962 das so genannte Holzkontrollgesetz beschlossen.
