Obwohl seine Interessen und seine Expertise bei den metallosupramolekularen Strukturen und der Festkörperchemie liegen, insbesondere bei der Verwendung von Metallionen beim Aufbau neuer Architekturen, welche spezifische elektronische und photophysikalische Eigenschaften aufweisen, hat er breites Interesse an multidisziplinärer Forschung, welche konventionelle Grenzen sprengt.
Für sein Projekt LiLo (Light-in, Light-out) hat er den prestigeträchtigen ERC Advanced Researcher Grant erhalten (2011-2016), bei welchem nachhaltige Festkörperchemie im Zentrum steht.
