Die Serie “Trappings” (2000/03) ist van der Merwes bekannteste Serie und umfasst Kernaspekte seines Schaffens, wie der Frage nach der oftmals von Krieg geprägten afrikanischen Geschichte, nach Formen des kollektiven Erinnerns, Repräsentation oder auch Maskulinität.
Zu sehen sind lebensgroße Uniformen der südafrikanischen Streitkräfte des Anglo-Boer South African Krieges, beiden Weltkriegen sowie dem Angolan War aus dem South African Military Museum in Johannesburg.

The series “Trappings” (2000/03) is van der Merwe’s best known series and includes core aspects of his work such as questions about the history of Africa that was often marked by war, forms of collective remembrance, representation or also masculinity.
The viewer is confronted with life-sized uniforms of the South African armed forces of the Anglo-Boer South African war, both World Wars as well as the Angolan War from the South African Military Museum in Johannesburg.
