For new experiments with ultracold fermions in a two-dimensional optical lattice we have an open PhD position available.
Since December 2010, Bose-Einstein condensates of ultracold Rubidium atoms can be realized and loaded into a three-dimensional optical lattice within our Rubidium project.

Now, the scientists add another pair of counter-propagating laser beams forming an optical lattice with just half the period along one of the initial directions.
This leads to a splitting of each of the potential tubes trapping the orthogonally elongated quantum gases into two.

The results of the investigation have shown how the optical lattice has to be dimensioned and how many atoms may be stored in it to operate a very accurate lattice clock also with strontium-88.
A clock is now being built on this basis which is more compact and more transportable than the previous lattice clocks.

Auf dieser Grundlage wollen sie jetzt eine Uhr bauen, die kompakter und transportabler als bisherige Gitteruhren ist.
