Service-Point and Mainstream – it is quite obvious that these German words come from English, or they seem to, anyway.
But many traces of English – so-called loan translations – are not as easy to recognise.
English is penetrating languages around the world today, just as the medieval lingua franca made its mark on modern European languages.

In recent years, whole expressions rather than just individual words have been finding their way into German as loan translations.
More and more frequently, one hears of and reads about “the early bird that catches the worm” (der frühe Vogel, der den Wurm fängt) and things that turn out all right “at the end of the day” (am Ende des Tages).

In den vergangenen Jahren haben nicht nur einzelne Wörter, sondern auch ganze Redewendungen als Lehnübersetzungen Eingang ins Deutsche gefunden:
Vom „frühen Vogel“, der „den Wurm fängt“ und Dingen, die sich „am Ende des Tages“ als gut erweisen werden, hört und liest man immer häufiger.

The loan translation “(he)runterladen” is also in common use.
