Symptome beim Säugling sind ein abnorm vergrößerter Kopfumfang, eine gespannte und vorgewölbte Fontanelle, eine auffällige Augenstellung, das so genannte Sonnenuntergangsphänomen, sowie Schreiphasen, Trinkschwäche, Entwicklungsstörung und eine vorgewölbte Stirn.
In späterem Alter, wenn die Schädelnähte verschlossen sind, treten sogenannte Hirndrucksymptome mit Kopfschmerzen, Erbrechen, oft nüchtern, Bewusstseinsstörungen, Sehstörungen, sowie epileptische Anfälle auf.
