Der Platz verdankt seinen Namen der Säule ( Colonna ) des Mark Aurel, die sich noch heute an ihrem antiken Platz befindet und damit an die Veränderungen erinnert, die die Topographie der Stadt im Laufe der Jahrhunderte erfahren hat.
In der Kaiserzeit stand auf dem Platz ein Kaiserkulttempel, zwei Portiken, die den davorliegenden Platz begrenzten und zum Abschluss auf der Seite zur via del Corso eine Reihe von Gebäuden für Wohnungen und Geschäfte.
Im Jahre 180 n.Chr. wurde in der Mitte des Platzes die Säule errichtet, auf deren Reliefs die Kriegszüge Mark Aurels dargestellt sind.
