Prof. Werner ist seit 1994 Universitätsprofessor für Theoretische Chemie an der Universität Stuttgart und Leiter des Instituts für Theoretische Chemie.
Seit 2006 ist er Dekan der Fakultät Chemie sowie seit 2008 Mitglied des Senatsausschusses Struktur.
Im Jahre 2000 erhielt er den Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz-Preis der DFG.
