In the course of the 18th century, “ geil ” increasingly became a coarse expression for sexual desire, but it could still be used, for example to criticise, without the speaker breaking a taboo.
It only became a taboo word in the 19th century, an age marked by prudishness, when sexuality was frowned upon.
Since the original neutral meaning of “geil” was no longer known, the fact that the word had previously been used to make euphemistic reference to sexual desire was forgotten.
