Ursprung
Der Ursprung der Kokospalme liegt in Melanesien,einer pazifischen Inselgruppe, nordöstlich von Australien.
Die Ausbreitung erfolgte teils auf natürlichem Weg, teils durch den Menschen.

It spread in part naturally and also through humans.

Eine akribisch dokumentierte Sammlung von 1.600 Objekten aus Melanesien und Mikronesien stammt vom deutschen Zoologen und Ethnologen Otto Finsch (1839-1917).
Rund 2.000 Südsee-Inventare gehen auf die Weltreise des Kreuzers „Kaiserin Elisabeth" (1892-1893) zurück, an der Erzherzog Franz Ferdinand von Österreich-Este teilnahm.
