Die Sole wird auf das Gradierwerk gepumpt und aus Kerben und Hähnen rieselt die Sole dann in die Dornen. Gradieren bedeutet, den Solegehalt des Wassers durch das mehrmalige Ablaufen zu erhöhen, um anschließend durch das Sieden das Salz zu gewinnen.

Saline is pumped onto the Salt Works and, via grooves and taps, it then trickles down into the thorns; the process serves to raise the salt content in the water by repeating the process of trickling down, and then salt is finally obtained by boiling the water.
